Singing Songs

To celebrate the choir’s 30th Anniversary in 2020, we used a grant from Leeds Inspired to host a number of song writing workshops, led by our previous MD Fran Wyburn. The first workshop was held in person at Heart in Headingley, Leeds but then, like so many, we were disrupted by COVID and lockdown. Undeterred, we used Zoom to host the subsequent workshops and wrote two songs based on archival material supplied by one of our members who works in the Leeds Library service.

Women of Leeds

Women of Leeds premiere performance was at the Street Choirs Festival in Whitby, 2022.

Middleton Railway

We wrote a song to celebrate the history of the Leeds Middleton Railway, the world’s oldest continuously working railway and premiered this song at Street Choirs Festival in Kendal, 2023. We also sang a version of Singing in the May by Mike O-Connor, with arrangement by Janet Russell and additional words by our MD Jenny Goodman.

Other Songs

Here’s a recording of us singing at the National Street Choirs Festival in Manchester, 2019. We sing Peace White Dove and Drop a Little Love which has words by Benjamin Zephaniah and music by our MD Jenny Goodman.

We sang at the Street Choirs Festival in Aberystwyth in 2013 with our friends Out In Tune. Both choirs were led by Lorraine Cowburn. Aberystwyth was very hot and we cooled off by singing Deep Blue Sea in the sea! Here we are singing Way Over Yonder, Yo Te Nombro Libertad and Deep Peace in the evening concert. There is also a rather blowy recording of us busking Unison in Harmony.

A recording of Song of the Low from 2012. A rousing song based on the poem by Ernest Jones the novelist, poet and Chartist. It was a staple in our repertoire for many years and always great to sing!
